How to get cited in AI Overviews
To get cited in AI Overviews, your page first has to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Google Search; Google says there’s no special markup or tag for AI Overviews. After that, the pages that get cited are the ones that answer the question and its follow-up questions clearly, so write direct answers, cover the sub-questions, and earn mentions on the sites Google already cites.
Start with Google’s own rules
Google’s guidance for site owners (AI features and your website) is short: the usual SEO basics apply. Your page must be indexed, allowed to show a snippet, reachable by Googlebot, and useful to people. Fittingly, Google’s own developer documentation was one of the sites cited most for “how to see if my business shows in Google AI Overviews” in our check.
Answer the questions behind the question
AI answers don’t just run your customer’s search. They break it into smaller searches (Google calls this “query fan-out”) and pull from pages that answer those. If your page answers the main question and the obvious follow-ups, it has more chances to be picked.
- Put the direct answer in the first two sentences.
- Use headings phrased like real questions.
- Be specific: numbers you can stand behind, steps, locations, prices, dates.
- Show who wrote it and when it was updated.
The Questions tab collects these follow-ups for you, from AI fan-out, People Also Ask, related searches and autocomplete:

Get mentioned where Google already looks
For each question, check which sites the AI Overview cites. If they’re publications, directories or forums, a genuine mention there is often faster than waiting for your own page to be picked.

Then watch it over time
Citations move. Set your questions to be checked on a schedule; RankResults can “track until found”, then check weekly that you’re still there.

Questions people ask
How do I get cited in AI Overviews?
Make sure your page is indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Google Search, because there’s no special tag for AI Overviews. Then answer the question and its follow-up questions directly, and earn mentions on the sites Google already cites.
Does schema markup get me into AI Overviews?
Google says no special structured data is needed for AI Overviews. Structured data can still help Google understand your page, as long as it matches what’s visible on the page.
Can I stop my site appearing in AI Overviews?
Google’s snippet controls apply: nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet limit what can be shown, including in AI features. Using them also limits your normal search snippets.
Do I need to rank #1 to be cited?
No. AI Overviews can cite pages that aren’t at the top of the regular results, because they draw on several related searches. Ranking well still helps.
